Voor video- en audiotoepassingen wordt het meest gebruik gemaakt van MPEG, een serie standaarden die zijn vastgesteld door de Motion Picture Expert Group. Hierbij worden niet alleen de afzonderlijke videobeelden, maar ook de sequenties gecodeerd, bijv. door vergelijkbare achtergronden maar één keer uit te zenden. MPEG-1 is in 1992 vastgelegd voor de digitale compressie van VHS-videobeeld. MPEG-2 stamt uit 1995 en ondersteunt HDTV. MP3, een populaire standaard voor geluidscompressie, is gebaseerd op MPEG-1/2. MPEG-4 is de meest recente versie, die deels nog in ontwikkeling is en vergaande manipulatie van multimedia mogelijk moet maken.
